In Finance, Newcomers, Old-timers Are Welcome

Image
Whoever says newcomers are not welcome is certainly a cruel old-timer. The newcomers in the Nigerian finance market are certainly shaking complacent old-timers awake from their slumbering on status quo couches. We call these newcomers in finance,  fintechs. They tend to leverage modern technologies to provide seamless and bespoke financial services. In economies where financial sector growth had been abysmal and informal sector prevalent, the stream of new entrants in finance is refreshing breeze.  Most fintechs are not usually burdened with the costs of running a network of physical bank branches like counterpart old-timers, and their employees may as well work remotely. Whoever says driving primarily for profit is critical for new business is certainly not a newcomer seeking first to achieve a clientele benchmark. In order to woo clients, fintech offer advantages that many traditional bank models cannot afford. Fintech account subscription promotion strategies include bonuses for sav

Kinship Remittances Are Thicker Than Water

Image
A well-known medieval proverb alludes that blood is thicker than water. This saying is usually taken to mean that family relationships and loyalties are the strongest and most important ones.  Even though inhumane cultures and unwholesome media impressions have done a lot to desecrate strong family values in modern times, this proverb retains potent practicalities. A vivid illustration can be seen in the trend of capital flows to developing countries.  For many capital-poor economies, international capital injections, in forms of official development assistance (ODA), foreign direct investment (FDI), portfolio debt and equity flows, and remittances, are critical oils in the wheels of national development. In recognition of this, many low- and middle-income country governments, in their characteristic top-bottom approach, embark on intensive investment promotion campaigns as well as structural reforms to court the benevolence of aid donors. While such efforts may have yielded staggering

Goats Racing to Cities

Image
In a recent development economics class, we observed trends in and prospects for urbanisation. As I laugh out loud on the push factors  for rural-urban migration in many developing countries, the story of the 'Three Billy Goats Gruff' fit my puzzle. In the beautiful story, a related set of billy goats could see a meadow green across a bridge, sumptuous to their thirsty minds and hungry bellies. The grass would likely be more nutritious than the brown and tasteless pasture fields they were presently sentenced to, so they thought. However, in order to get near the new and wonderful pasture, they would have to pass through a bridge manned by a wicked old troll, who lived to gobble up ambitious passerbys. The billy goats took turns at an attempt to cross the bridge, starting with the littlest goat. Against the odds posed by the wicked and greedy old troll, who laid in wait underneath the bridge, the first two goats argued their way to the other side. Finally, the biggest billy g

Infographic: Household Purchasing Models

Image
As diverse as households characteristics are, so are their monthly requirements. More often than not, set budget items may determine what gets included on regular shopping lists. Moreover, purchasing models adopted by households may depend on the nature of goods - from groceries to durable household equipments - within consideration. Members of middle-income and upper income classes tend to have greater outlays required to make bulk purchases, thereby escaping vagaries of price fluctuations for fast-moving consumer goods.  On the lower rung of the income ladder, members of a low-income class, who may be daily wage earners tend to opt for buy-as-you-go purchasing options. Sadly, many low-income households bear the brunt of rising food prices and commodity price shocks. The amount of time available for regular market visits, may also affect a household's purchasing model. Time-poor householders, who may choose to allocate limited time to other high-value or income-generating activiti
