Survey Throwback: Nigeria 2015 Pre-Elections Survey

Image
As we move towards Nigeria's 2023 Presidential elections, I thought to share a throwback of the pre-elections survey I facilitated back then. In case you missed it, click the link to the post here (https://oluyomioladavidinsights.blogspot.com/2015/03/nigeria-decides-2015-survey-brief.html?m=1) Amongst several findings, the PDP and APC dominated respondent voters' consideration for likely patronage, while other participating political parties accounted for a meagre 1 per cent. In an upcoming voting patterns survey, monitoring and evaluation questions would be included to examine the current state of the nation and pulse of the electorate. Please watch out for the survey notification. Thank you!

Sacrifice Poverty

Luggage scanners and metal detectors drive effectiveness and save man-hours at crowded airports and bank buildings. They can be useful for screening persons and baggage moving into living spaces, inns, and hotels. A machine with widespread application, can save precious man-hours. In an high-tech age machines are more efficient and effective detectives. Rich people would buy tools to save time. Poor people would use other people's time to save money.

Inclusion and GVCs

With enabling institutional environments and connective infrastructure, global value chains can include economic agents in developing countries. Homegrown solutions are as viable as many on global markets.  With adequate #finance options, Africa can #industrialise sustainably.

Unequal Work, Unequal Pay Realities

Image
Men's work and women's work may be diverse and weigh differentiately, given that nature and nurture wire males and females differently. Wherever patriarchal norms dominate, women's work may include informal unpaid care work within households and formal paid work within corporates.  Both powerful male and their female counterparts may likely supply greater productive hours to community work over the course of a lifetime, in contrast to their perceived and socially-adjudged powerless comparators. My concept of power being the ability to make game-changing decisions that impact on wide-ranging outcomes. Even though macroeconomists always point to policy coverage alternatives, with more household finance options, empowered households may also create incentives that narrow the gaps in unequal work. Effective research queries in equal work and pay considerations may include: ■ Who pays for the necessary extra care work burdens that women tend to bear? ■ What sort of cultural para

Value Dominance

Image
As I think through and analyse the dilemma of development, I have found some ease in dichotomising economies of the world into: active and lazy economies.  Since I intend for my presentation to stimulate inward-looking activities for possible structural transformation, I have depicted a scenario where active economies dominate the thought, culture, activities, and markets in the global economy. To my mind: Lazy Economies  Are countries with little or no processing capacity, that thrive on raw commodity exports, experience premature deindustrialisation, and tend to consistently lose their accumulated stock of human capital to brain drain.  Active Economies Are countries with established processing capacity, that thrive on manufactured exports and high-tech services, build talent, and grow human capital stock to create value within and outside their national borders. In lazy economies, as value-adding activities become more intense and concerted policies become more sustainable in outloo

Bias Glass is Fragile

Image
When all the fanfare is over, in a patriarchal world with patriarchal norms, only just men can esteem women implicitly and promote family-friendly gender bills, even when the women are unavailable to defend their own cause. Breaking the bias can begin with those whose thought processes are not distorted with insecurities, fallacies, and half-truths.  Breaking the bias means elevating reason and logical competence over prejudice. In any previously colonised state like Nigeria and most of Africa, breaking the bias may require a cultural reset, an ideological shift, and a concerted reorientation programme. Culture being how we judge behaviour, the manner of our reasoning and what informs our decisions. In our humanity, we can all humbly acknowledge the varying leadership roles men, as well as women, play in the domestic and global economy. This may require that we prize effective partnerships over and above a base struggle for supremacy in our functional roles. United in our diversity, me

Dialogue Balances Power

Image
Whenever equals meet in political combat, it may be called a contest. Whenever there is an imbalance of power, it can be likened to bullying. The current Russian-Ukranian invasion seems to me like a clear case of inter-national bullying. War is always bad for the global economy, as it depletes the stock of human capital, as well as physical, financial, and social capital. True power can be demonstrated in the rational choice for meaning-making dialogue, peaceful co-existence, and unified diversity. Let us save and share global prosperity by esteeming and choosing: ⚖️ #People, not weapons ⚖️ #Peace, not war ⚖️ #Partnerships, not competition ⚖️ #Planet, not destruction ⚖️ #Prosperity, not displacement Yes we can, and we should. #Sustainabledevelopment  #Conflict #Bullyingbehaviour #Diversity #Savetheplanet #Peacekeeping #Globalcitizen #IDPs #Refugees
