What are the chief opportunities and challenges facing leaders today?

I provided a perspective, in response to the question 'what are the chief opportunities and challenges facing leaders today', in a recent fellowship application. Sharing my thoughts on the leadership realities in a globalized world was exciting. Here goes...

Leaders in all fields of endeavour and spheres of influence in today’s globalized world face new and emerging challenges due to the pace and pattern of social, economic, and technological change. Therefore, emerging leaders need to learn how to lead in such challenging economic, political and social climate.

Even though globalization and the shrinking global space presents myriad challenges, it also presents personal growth opportunities for leaders as they adapt to the pace of change. For instance, in response to the speed of change, emerging leaders keep learning to understand changing demographics, new technologies as well as policies advanced by global governance institutions.

Increased competition, complexity of global issues and changing societal expectations requires that leaders drive performance, be accountable and flexible in their responsiveness to emerging challenges as well as opportunities. Leading in international affairs and influencing change requires a wholesome perspective of the global economy, culture, diplomatic relations, and role of all stakeholder organisations in it.

In addition to their excellent communication, as well as planning and organizational skills, good leaders are role models that others want to follow. They empower others to translate shared vision into results. Effective leaders are usually proactive in developing strategies needed to accomplish objectives.

Leaders understand the role of social and collaborative capital, so they exhibit the ability to establish and maintain relationships with a broad range of persons who may provide support for their current or future causes. Also, leaders anticipate and resolve conflicts by their constant pursuit of mutually agreeable solutions.
